Ethnography

Saranda and its vicinities constitute the most diversified ethnographic area in the country with the features of Laberia region, of Cameria region, of the Greek minority, of Bregdeti region being the most outstanding. It is quite eye-catching the wealth and variety of the folk costumes among which the costumes of the women of Delvina, Peca, Konispol, Karroqi, Leshnica, Nivica, etc, are of rare beauty. Characteristic of the men's costumes are the kilts, the long-sleeved doublet, the waistcoats, the vests, the high caps, the fezzes and the various scarves. We normally find two costumes in each region: one for everyday use and the second for celebrations and festivals and they differ from each other. The polyphonic songs are common characteristic of all regions but there are slight differences in Laberia, Cameria, and the Greek minority. Most of the songs and dances are accompanied by musical instruments and small bands. The folk orchestra of Delvina, which is the oldest and the most typical in the country, is the successor of the traditional urban music  of south Albania. Among the musical instruments the most popular are the flutes, the flageolets, the whistles, the double-pipe bugles, the reed-pipes, the bagpipes, the clarinets, the tambourines, the lutes, the violins, etc.

Stone and wood are the most common materials used in construction work. The art of carving in stone and marble is quite developed. So is the wool and felt manufacture, especially the weaving of carpets and rugs, which are highly exported for the foreign market. Rush-work, broom-work and osier-work are also practiced in Saranda area for making baskets and mats. Agave is also grown here and its fibres are made into ropes. Through the years handicrafts such as woodwork, copperwork, tinwork, tailoring, shoemaking, saddle making, sheet-ironwork, etc have been developed and enriched. There is a rich tradition of fishing with nets in small rowing boats and larger sailing boats, but also as a hobby with hooks and harpoons.
